Iva Marie Goodhall

Iva Marie Goodhall was a beloved grandmother, mother, and wife during her 93 years of life. She passed away peacefully on September 12, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Born on July 14, 1930 in Ashley, Michigan to Gladys Marie and Alden Tupper Burlingame, Marie was the oldest of two children. She was raised in Ashley and graduated from Ashley High School in 1947.  She married the love of her life, Willard Herbert Goodhall, on September 10, 1948. In 1949, they welcomed their first child Linda, followed by Sharon, and then Rodney.

Marie loved to spend time with her family and friends, to travel, watch the birds, play cards, and work with plants. She volunteered for over 40 years at the Ashley Nursing Home weekly calling Bingo numbers and believed strongly in giving back. American Red Cross awarded her the Lifetime Achievement award for her service to Gratiot County in 1997. She also volunteered her time at countless funeral dinners for the North Star community, volunteered at the Ithaca Day Camp held at Reed Park, as well as the North Star Easter Egg Hunt.

In addition to her volunteering, she began working with flowers at Kleinhan’s Greenhouse, which led her to opening her own greenhouse called Flower’s by Marie. She used that creativity with flowers to design floral arrangements for many community grave side urns. She also spent time as a member of the Chit Chat Club.

She was known affectionately as “Grandma Marie” to all who met her and always had an open door for anyone who stopped by. She was always up for a game of cards with her family and could talk to anyone. She loved a good slot machine, blueberry pancakes, and was always waiting with open arms for one of her amazing hugs. She was stubborn, fiercely independent, loving, and unfailingly welcomed everyone and anyone to family dinners at her house. She was the center of her family and will be incredibly missed.

Marie is predeceased by her husband, her three children Linda Goodhall, Sharon Carman, and Rodney Goodhall. She is also predeceased by her parents, as well as her brother, Jack Burlingame.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Rodger Carman, her daughter-in-law, Becky Goodhall, bonus daughter Cindy (Ray) Hernandez, as well as her grandchildren Shalon (Dave Rozich) Nieman, James (Nikee) Carman, MaLynda (Jeremie) Smith, Shane (Laura) Carman, Amanda (Keith) Kuczynski, and Holly (Tom) High. In addition, she is survived by her great grandchildren: Tyler (Alex), Brendan (Kacey), Megan (Jared), Ryan (Sarah), Jeren, JaLyn (Anthony), Haden, Madee, Alden, Nathan, Justin, Luke, Iva, Marie, Kodie, Dylan, Zak, Garrett (Jenna), and Grace (Brandon). She is survived by four great-great grandchildren: Akia, Sawyer, Paisley, and Addyson, as well as three more on the way. She also leaves many other family members, friends, and countless others who will miss her dearly. Her impact on her family is immeasurable and she will be missed beyond what words can say.

A visitation with the family will be held at Barden’s Funeral Home in Ithaca on Monday, September 18th, 2023 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The memorial service will begin at 4:00pm. Donations can be made to Gratiot Animals in Need, P.O. Box 363, Ithaca, Michigan 48847.

The family is being served by the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.bardenfuneralhome.com.

Grandma, I will miss you forever. You gave every ounce of love you had and I can proudly say we gave you every ounce of love you could ever receive. Your outlook on life always kept me in awe. You tragically lost your first child to a drunk driver and instead of being bitter you doubled down and donated your time to help others, you lost your husband to cancer and yet doubled down some more and volunteered even harder, and you lost your other 2 children to cancer less than 2 years apart. With all of this tragedy you never asked anyone to feel sorry for you, yet instead found ways to help others. We are all blessed to have been able to spend as much time with you as we have. Nothing has made me prouder than to say “This is my Grandma Marie”. Love you and miss you forever. Jim

Grandma Marie, thank you for accepting me as one of your own, feeding me, and allowing me to hang out at your place with Shalon countless times throughout high school. You always had the best outlook on life and gave the best advice. Your family will miss you terribly, but deep down we are all so happy that you are now reunited with your husband and children. All my love, Julie

Grandma, thank you for being such a huge part in so many lives. It is hard to explain how we are all feeling right now. I just know that it is a blessing knowing that you are at peace with everyone who has passed before you. You have been an inspiration to many, and forever will be remembered for all the wonderful things you have done. It is hard knowing that you are gone, as I know now there will no longer be family get togethers and holidays spent at your house like I have come to cherish and look forward to all my life.. Where as kids we would play football, baseball, or hide and seek in the yard, play cards, get in trouble for wrestling, put our Halloween costumes on to get ready for trick-or-treating, gather around the living room to open gifts, or eat as much food as possible during Thanksgiving as we watch the Lions (probably lose). Where we all would meet new and future members of the family, and share the most funny stories and memories with one another.. There will never be anything quite like ‘Grandma Marie’s house’ <3 I’ll love and miss you forever grandma. -Jeren

Marie, You will forever be missed. After spending so much time at your home with Linda you were like a second mother. You were such an amazing person. With all the tragedies of losing you husband and all three of your children you were never bitter. You always had such a positive attitude. Rest In Peace, Marie.

I have always greatly admired Aunt Marie, as did our mom Patricia Goodhall Shaw. (Aunt Marie married mom's brother, our Uncle Herb.) Aunt Marie was very patient with kids, in particular my cousin, her son, Rodney (who I always called Buck.) Her patience with us was so amazing that I believe it earned her a sainthood! She loved cats and always kept food out for them. I remember her cats always being huge! I will always remember the delicious buckeyes that she make. One time Buck and I drove north to a weekend youth retreat at Camp Living Water and she made buckeyes for us and they were supposed to last us for the trip there and the trip back, but they were gone long before we ever got to our destination! Buck and I liked to play with his plastic soldiers, cowboys, and indians in his room upstairs at their house and we'd get rather rowdy at times. She just come to the bottom of the stairs and say "You two settle down now" or if we got too rowdy she'd call up to us and say "Alright you two, get outside and air out!" I loved her laugh! It was like a big warm hug every time. Whenever we'd visit, she was always very genuine in her interest in the happening in our lives. I'm sure she still is...she's just looking at it from a different perspective now, and still loving all of us...and always will. I'll see you in heaven, Aunt Marie! Love you so very much!

Matthew 19:19 says “Love your Neighbor as Yourself”... THAT, Marie DID! Her relationship with Him... poured out into others. Not only was she the Best Neighbor EVER to us for almost 27 years, she was the definition of this Commandment EVERYWHERE she went. I remember her leaving every Wednesday to go to Ashley’s nursing home, driving by our house, just one of her great ministries. She LOVED US ALL So Much, and we are SO BLESSED to have her in our Lives. ~ My Fondest Memory happened so frequently .... looking over in her yard and seeing ALL that LEGACY, Marie’s Loving Family filling her property with vehicles, 4-wheelers & footballs. She TRULY Cherished her Family... and I know that you already, deeply miss her. Our prayers are with you... ““”HUGS”””
