Charles A. Smith
Charles Ace Smith, age 92, formerly of Alma, died peacefully August 13, 2017 at Rosewood AFC in Ithaca.
Charles was born March 17, 1925, in Alma, the son of Clare A. and Goldie May (Switzer) Smith. He left school at a young age to help support his family after the death of his father. His first job was working at the sugar beet factory in Alma. Charles also worked for Alma Trailer, and C.L. Greenings & Sons in Alma, before retiring in 1988 from the City of Alma after many years of service in the street department.
Charles loved carving, drawing, and painting trains, going to steam and gas engine shows, and traveling. He especially loved spending time with his family and had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him.
Charles is survived by his five children, Carolyn K. Hammar of Gladwin, Chuck (Jeanette) Smith of Alma, Sherry (Dave) Kyle of Gladwin, Clare Smith of Walling, TN, and Laurie (Robert) Clark of Ithaca; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his sisters, Clairlene Sych and Joyce Marcy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his second wife, Alice, his parents, his brother, Douglas, and his sisters, Betty and Jean.
